PEI Privateers Team History
The PEI Privateers entered the Maritime Football League as an expansion team in 2004 and have since become one of the top offensive threats in the league. Although the team is based in Charlottetown, it has sought to bring tackle football to the whole Island, playing games in Charlottetown, Rollo Bay and Cornwall over the years. The Privateers are proudly a fully provincial team, drawing players from all across the Island to compete in the MFL.
The Privateers’ team history has centered around a core of dedicated veteran players and upstart youth who have helped guide and develop the team. In 2009, the Privateers made their first Mariner Bowl appearance and this success was achieved through a combination of sponsor support like that from long-time sponsor B.J.’s Truck Centre, off-field organization, and a skilled and unified team approach. In recent years the team’s growth and success has been driven by a committed and focused group of leaders including the 2009 MFL Volunteer of the Year, General Manager Terry Allen, 2010 MFL Most Outstanding Player, Quarterback Chris “Tex” Mutch, 2009 MFL Most Outstanding Receiver Mitch Murphy, All-Star Runningback Dave Clark, as well as long time Defensive standouts Keighan Scott, Mike Miller, and 4-time All-Star Colin McLeod. With loyal commitment from veteran players and the growing support of the Island community, the Privateers have been able to build skill, compete, and promote quality tackle football for the province of PEI. Notable contributors to laying a foundation for the Privateers include current Head Coach Matt Holzer, former Offensive Coordinator Joe Puiia, past Defensive Coach Neil Connaughton, former Head Coach Danny Comeau, past MFL Commissioner Colin Stewart and former Player/Coach Mark MacDougall - the current Head Coach for the 2011 AFL Champion Holland College Hurricanes.
Many Senior Men's Privateers give back to the island football programs during the off-season through coaching Varsity and Bantam Privateers Club teams, coaching other club teams, and assisting with flag and tackle skills development clinics for upcoming youth through Football PEI. The Privateers have also refocused their efforts and are increasing their presence in the Island community through charitable activities such as the popular ‘Soupy Saturdays’ fundraiser for the Charlottetown Food Bank, CIBC's Run for the Cure, and the annual ‘Pink Game’ promoting Breast Cancer Awareness.
Although they have not yet clinched an MFL championship, the competitive, tenacious, and aggressive Privateers team is positioning itself to win and is looking to improve on previous successes.
